Jeff Merkley, the Democratic challenger for one of Oregon's U.S. Senate seats, made the most of his opportunity to speak at his party's historic National convention at which Barack Obama was chosen as the nominee. Oregon's incumbent senator Gordon Smith, however, chose instead to stay away from the Republican convention in an effort to distance himself from any association with the GOP in this increasingly blue state.
